I found a solution I think - select the bugged character, then if you quick save during the combat (f5) and then load that save it should load back in with the battle hub there. Playing as a sorcerer I noticed that after the prologue on the nautiloid two of my cantrips have disappeared from the hotbar - those being fire bolt and ray of frost, rendering me unable to use them. While holding the slide bar with left click, I can switch back to the character missing the slide using F1, F2, F3, F4 (whatever spot they are in) and it reappears.
