IMO, the Summoner is a rather competent martial class, with casting that's actually quite decent due to the fact that low-level consumables are practically free. There have been game days where my Summoner didn't cast a single leveled spell, due to saving them for a boss fight that never came, and still did a ton of damage and debuffing.
